Global Warming

The main cause of today's global warming is the combustion of fossil fuels. These hydrocarbons heat up the planet via the greenhouse effect, which is caused by the interaction between Earth's atmosphere and incoming radiation from the sun. The main gases responsible for the greenhouse effect are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide(NOx), and water vapor (H2O).

Energy Transition

The energy transition is a pathway toward transformation of the global energy sector from fossil-based to zero-carbon. This is internationally embedded in a number of agreements like the Paris Agreement. It is a legally binding international treaty on climate change, its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The treaties are the main reason for complex permitting (regulation), incentives (subsidies) and penalties (environmental taxation) governments currently impose.
